HETAS REGISTERED INSTALLERS

The Technical Side, Simplified

Installing a wood-burning stove is a major structural alteration to your property. It requires strict adherence to Document J building regulations to ensure your home is safe from carbon monoxide and fire hazards.

At Tayside Stoves, we don’t cut corners. Every installation is calculated for proper airflow (draw), distance to combustibles, and hearth requirements.

Because we operate alongside Steve Beattie Joinery, we are uniquely equipped to handle complex installations that require structural modifications—such as removing load-bearing lintels, widening chimney breasts, or building non-combustible stud walls.

HETAS Certificate Issued

We self-certify our work, meaning you don’t need to pay extra for council building control inspections.

Carbon Monoxide Safety

Every install includes the correct ventilation and CO alarms as standard.

Installation Types

Flexible Flue Liners

For homes with an existing masonry chimney. We sweep the stack, drop a continuous 316 or 904 grade stainless steel liner, and pot the top with a cowl to prevent rain ingress and downdraughts.

Twin Wall Systems

No chimney? We install rigid, insulated twin-wall pipes. These can run internally through ceilings and the roof, or externally up the side of your house, finished in black or stainless steel.

Structural Openings

We specialise in ‘knock-outs’. We remove old gas fires, open up the brickwork to its original builder’s opening, install concrete lintels, and render the chamber with heat-resistant plaster.

The “Supply & Fit” Package

We don’t just fit the pipe; we finish the room.

1. Protection

We sheet up the room and use dust extraction systems. Opening up chimneys can be messy, but we treat your home with respect.

2. The Hearth

We lay a constructional hearth (slate, granite, or glass) that meets the required 12mm or 125mm thickness standards.

3. The Stove

The stove is connected via a vitreous enamel flue pipe. We test the draw (airflow) to ensure easy lighting and efficient burning.

4. The Finish

We plaster the chimney breast and can supply and fit non-combustible oak-effect beams or surrounds to frame the fire.

Not sure which system you need?

We offer free site surveys to inspect your property and advise on the best flue method.

Installation FAQs

Standard 316-grade stainless steel liners typically come with a 10-year warranty, though they often last longer with correct fuel usage. Premium 904-grade liners (recommended for heavy usage) can have warranties up to 20 years.

Yes, provided the stove is certified not to raise the hearth temperature above 100°C (many modern stoves are). If the stove produces more heat downwards, we must use a constructional hearth (concrete/slate) at least 125mm thick.

We use a Twin Wall Insulated Flue system. We can build a “false chimney breast” out of stud work and fireboard to hide the pipe, giving the illusion of a traditional fireplace, or leave the pipe exposed as a contemporary feature.

For most stoves under 5kW in older houses (built before 2008), an air vent is usually not required. For stoves over 5kW, or in modern airtight homes, a permanently open air vent is a legal requirement. We often install “direct air” kits that feed air directly to the stove from outside, avoiding draughts in the room.
