At Tayside Stoves, we are uniquely qualified to handle this work. Because we are the heating division of Steve Beattie Joinery, we have the skills to safely remove rubble, install concrete lintels, and plaster the finish to a high standard.

Fireplace Knock-outs

We remove old gas fires and back boilers, taking the opening back to its original builder’s brickwork to maximise space.

Hearth Installation

Supply and fit of custom slate, granite, or tiled hearths. We ensure they are perfectly level and meet the 12mm or 125mm building regulations.

Beams & Mantels

We supply and fit solid oak beams or non-combustible oak-effect beams (safe for closer proximity to the stove).

Plastering & Skimming

We render the inside of the chamber with heat-resistant materials and skim the external breast for a flawless paint-ready finish.

Brick & Stone Work

Prefer an exposed look? We can clean and point original brickwork or install stone slips for a rustic cottage aesthetic.

Fireboarding

For timber-framed houses, we line the chamber with A1 fire-rated board to ensure your home is fully protected from the heat.

The Renovation Process

1. Investigation

During the survey, we check the dimensions of your chimney breast to see how wide and high we can safely go.

2. Rip Out

We remove the old fire, surround, and rubble. This is the messy part, but we take great care to protect your floor and furniture.

3. The Build

We insert a concrete lintel, lay the new hearth, and render/board the chamber walls to make them fireproof and neat.

4. Stove Fit

Once the building work is dry and finished, we install the stove and liner, leaving you with a complete transformation.

It can be, as there is often decades of soot and rubble behind old fireplaces. However, we use dust sheets, floor protectors, and industrial vacuums to contain the dust. We recommend removing soft furnishings from the room before we start.

Almost always, yes. When we widen an opening, we are removing the bricks that support the chimney stack above. We must install a reinforced concrete lintel to take that weight and ensure the structural safety of your home.

In some cases, yes. If you have a timber or stone surround you love, we can often work carefully to preserve it while updating the hearth and chamber. However, we may need to remove it temporarily during the works.

We use special heat-resistant rendering materials. You typically need to wait 3-4 days for the plaster to dry naturally before you can paint it, and slightly longer before you can light a roaring fire, to prevent cracking.
